Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome treatment that works

You’ve had all the tests and there’s nothing wrong with your stomach. No-one seems able to give you an explanation as to what is causing your symptoms and how to prevent bouts of vomiting.

Why would a headache centre be so successful in treating cyclic vomiting syndrome?

The answer and treatment for many sufferers of cyclic vomiting syndrome lies in the close connection between the ‘headache centre’ in the brainstem and one of the key controls in the brainstem for nausea and vomiting. These connections are what causes nausea and vomiting in migraine sufferers, and it is why cyclic vomiting syndrome can respond so well to the same type of treatment.

We have treated children as young as 3 years old successfully for this cyclic vomiting syndrome.

The ‘headache centre’ in the brainstem is the trigeminal nucleus – responsible for all referred signals to the brain, and known to be overactive in chronic migraine and headache. The cause of this overactivity in a vast majority of cases is a poorly understood and mistreated mechanical fault in the top of the neck. This causes a constant flow of excess signals to be sent from the upper three cervical nerves directly into the trigeminal nucleus. As the signal spreads it can begin to irritate the adjacent ‘chemo-receptor trigger zone’ or CTZ.

The CTZ is one of key controls for nausea and vomiting in the brainstem receiving inputs directly from the stomach, from the vestibular system, the vagus nerve (gag reflex in the throat) and from dopamine receptors which are tiggered in stress responses (fight or flight mechanism). Due to the proximity of the CTZ to the trigeminal nucleus, irritation of the trigeminal nerve can cause the symptoms of nausea and vomiting associated with migraine. Not unlike silent migraine, or migraine aura without headache, on rare occasions these symptoms can be present in the absence of headache, and so it is with cyclic vomiting syndrome.

By correcting the fault in the top of the neck we decrease the overstimulation of the brainstem, and successfully treat all forms of headache including migraine, and cyclic vomiting syndrome in a safe, natural and sustainable way.
